.

Approach
My approach focused on quantifying ground water levels in the spring complex relative
to stream flow in Spring Creek. I measured ground water levels in the wetland complex
associated with the spring, measured stream stage and flow (flow measured by John Almy,
GMUG National Forest) and the elevation at which water entered the stream. I evaluated the
connection between ground waters and Spring Creek by comparing the seasonal variance in
ground water levels and stream flow, to determine whether ground water level changed
simultaneously with Spring Creek. I also analyzed the chemical content of ground water and
surface water to determine if they are similar.

Methods

Precioitation: An Onset Data logging rain gauge, with Hobo Event logger, was installed on-site

. to measure summer precipitation. The data were used to identify whether any portion of the

spring or stream complex responded to rain events.

Surface water levels and flow: .A staff g;lUgewas establishedjnSpril}g ~r~!lk,Jlsing fully slotted_ _
PVC pipe and a Global Water WL-15 wliterlevellogger. The logger records the heightofthe
water column above the pressure sensor. Using stream flow measurements by GMUG staff on
October 18 and 28, 2002, and April II, May 23 and June 5 and 26,2003 and simultaneous
measures of stream stage I developed a rating curve.

Ground water levels: Depth to ground water was measured in monitoring wells. Wells were
constructed by hand augering to approximately 1 m depth using a bucket auger, and casing the
well with fully slotted 2" diameter Schedule 40 PVC pipe. Several wells were constructed from
steel drive points because the rocky soil prohibited hand augering. A total of 8 wells were
installed. We installed Global Water WL-15 water level loggers to continuously record water
levels in 3 wells. Ground and surface water levels were measured through the winter of 2002-
2003 at several sites, and from spring through fall of2003. Soil stratigraphy at each well site

I
