They cooperated with the <br />Radiological Health Division of the Federal <br />Water Quaiity Administration in a study of <br />radiological activity at various uranium mills <br />and their effects on water supplies in such <br />situations as Rocky Flats and others. <br /> <br />The Division provided men to assist in <br />monitoring before and after the detonation at <br />Project Rulison. <br /> <br />I want to give you a few more general com- <br />ments. The last session of the General Assembly <br />provided some new legislation. One of these <br />bills, Senate Bill 35, provides for the first <br />time for penalties for persons who violate ' <br />a cease and desist order issued by the com- <br />mission. It is interesting to note that shortly <br />after the passage of this act a community which <br />had been issued a cease and desist order and <br />which had not taken the time to re~uest a hear- <br />ing before the commission within the 20-day <br />period ~rovided, upon enactment of the legisla- <br />tion promptly came in and asked belatedly for <br />a hearing, which was granted. We think it has <br />somewhat sharpened people's awarerl~ss of the <br />importance of trying to clean up their water <br />pollution problems. <br /> <br />Senate Bill 49 gave the commission authori- <br />ty to designate certain areas of the state <br />which ~re found to be unsuitable for. the use <br />of septic tank systems. The staff at present <br />is in the process of gathering such information <br />from district engineers and local health units <br />of the various counties and/or cities. <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br />Senate Bill 45 provided penalties for <br />pollution of water by radioactive toxic and <br />other wastes and by camper wastes and makes it <br />possible now to assess penalties for these types <br />of pollutions. It specifically provides that <br />it is unlawful to discharge camper wastes within <br />100 feet of any water even if these wastes have <br />
