I

Some surveys are made on a farm or ranch
basis to assist the operator develop a conser-
vation plan. About 50 percent of the surveys
are on a county or other area basis for official
publication. Counties or areas already mapped
include Baca,Prowers, Bent, Otero, Phillips,
Sedgwick, Morgan, Crowley, East Elbert, Douglas,
Arapahoe, Boulder, Adams and Lower Colorado.

Soil survey publications available to the
public include reports on the following counties
or areas: Prowers, Crowley, Morgan, Phillips,
East Elbert and Delta-Montrose. The Arapahoe,
Douglas, Adams, Otero, Baca, Sedgwick, Gunnison,
Chaffee-Lake, Alamosa and Boulder County surveys
are completed for publication.

We have a lag in publications nationally
of about 350 Soil Survey reports due to lack of
funds to prepare and print the reports, that is,
the final printing of them.

In addition to farmers and ranchers the
reports are used by developers, consulting firms,
county and city governments, pro~essional plan-
ners, researchers, state health departments and
others. As a matter of fact, just yesterday
the state health department here contacted us
to get copies of all our soil survey reports
that have been published as well as locations
unpublished where information is available.
They have run into a problem, two separate and
distinct problems, in many of these urban and
mountain development areas. They are very
interested in getting soil survey information
and the interpretative material particularly
as to where these installations can be effec-
tively applied and where they should not be.

I

Soil surveys cost about 20~ an acre and
about an additional 10~ per acre to publish.

Another phase of the conservation program
is one in which the SCS helps to assemble, screen,
and increase and develop new strains of plant
