The p~ovince is Colorado's sister state in Korea. They - <br />have been experiencing decades of drought and are faced with many issues related to growth and ., <br />development. I am looking forward to sharing more about this experience with you at the meeting. <br /> <br />Governor Meets Generals: On July 10 Governor Owens met with the two Army Corps of Engineers <br />(USACE) Division Commanders about the creation of a new Colorado USACE Central Services Office <br />in Denver. Van Shipley is the manager of the new office that will be run in conjunction with the CWCB <br />office. In September, we will add a report from Van to each of regular Board meeting agendas. Van's <br />telephone number is (303) 894-2044 and e-mail address Van.Shipley@state.co.us. <br /> <br />Raley Confirmed: At the last Board meeting I advis~d you that Bennett Raley had been nominated to <br />be the new Interior Department Assistant Secretary for Water and Science. I learned today that his <br />nomination has been confirmed. <br /> <br />New Reclamation Commissioner: On June 15 President Bush nominated John W. Keys, III as the new <br />Reclamation Commissioner. Currently a commercia} airplane pilot, Keys is a USBR veteran and former <br />director of the Bureau's Pacific Northwest region. Kpys began with USBR as a civil and hydraulic <br />engineer in Utah, North Dakota, Montana and Colorado, He also served as Chief of the Colorado River <br />Water Quality Office in Denver and worked in Washington, D,C. as Assistant to the Regional Director. <br /> <br />Bernhardt to Head Congressional Affairs Office: In May, President Bush appointed David Bernhardt <br />to direct the Interior Department's Office of Congressional and Legislative Affairs. Before taking the <br />position at the Interior Department, Bernhardt was an attorney with Brownstein, Hyatt and Farber, P,C. <br />and served on Congressman Scott McInnis' staff, Bernhardt is a native of Rifle. <br /> <br />Federal Lakes Recreation Demonstration Progr~m: On June 11 the Federal Lakes Recreation e <br />Leadership Council (Council) selected 31 lakes fo~ a nationwide program to determine how recreation <br />can be enhanced at the nation's more than 1,780 federally constructed lakes.
