Hahn, Copley Lake

Background

Copley Lake is a small natural lake located west of Crested
Butte near the old mining town of Irwin. Normally, the lake
varies between 8 and 13 surface acres in size and has a tributary .
watershed of approximately 1 square mile. The lake, according to
the Division of wildlife files, is void of fish and has an
average depth of 2.5 feet with a maximum depth of approximately
5.0 feet. The lake is used extensively for research purposes by
the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory because of the unique
biological conditions which develop in the absence of a fishery.
The lake, under natural conditions, drains to the east when full.
However, a portion of the high mountain meadow in which the lake
is situated does drain west and it is conceivable the lake could
drain both directions on occasion.

A Mr. Frank Long, now deceased, obtained a decree on August
5, 1975, with an appropriation date of 1954, for 39.75 acre-feet
of water to be used for recreation, fish culture, biological
study and research, and heritage preservation. Subsequently, on
May 12, 1976, the CWCB established a minimum lake level
appropriation of 23.0 acre-feet which was decreed on January 10,
1980, without opposition.

Prior to either decree there existed an old pipeline going
west out of Copley Lake which was used to supply water to several
mining claims near Irwin.

722 .
cop/lke
