.1~...\

May I, 2006

'.

Board of Directors
Colorado Water Conservation Board
1J13 Sherman
Denver, CO

.

Dear Board Member:
In the summer of2007, a celebration commemorating 100 years of San Luis
Valley reservoirs is being planned at various venues in the valley. The purpose of this
celebration is to educate the public as to the value of these reservoirs and to recognize the
immense efforts it took to build them. Attached is a list of potential participants and
events, and a more detailed explanation of goals to be achieved. We will attend your next
meeting to present some of these ideas and to ask for your support.
Why, you may wonder, would the CWCB be interested in a fairly local affair?
The answer lies in history, as well as your present involvement with water throughout the
state. Another 100 year celebration in the San Luis Valley was sponsored by Colorado
Water Conservation Board and Colorado Agricultural and Mechanical College. It was
held in 1952 and commemorated "100 Years of Irrigation in Colorado." The list of
speakers included the Governor, State Engineer, and many notable people such as the
Director of the CWCB Board, Judge Clifford H. Stone. There were banquets and parades
- an opportunity to honor the early pioneers of water management.
That celebration lasted three days and resulted in a wonderful "rare" book
containing the agenda, speeches, and menus. Although the final plans for 2007 will be
formulated by a celebration planning committee, early ideas include the unveiling of a
traveling exhibit that will be on view in all comers of the valley over the next 5 - 10
years and a DVD that will be sent to all valley schools, libraries, museums, and visitor
centers. Both the exhibit and DVD will use historical photographs and documents to tell
the story of building the dams and reservoirs of the San Luis Valley.
Grant applications to the Colorado Historical Society and Colorado Endowment
for the Humanities are being written to fund those projects. If you feel it worthwhile, a
letter of support for the creation of the exhibit and DVD would truly be beneficial.
Please address letter to "To whom it may concern" and mention, as you wish, any of the
points made in the celebration plans and goals, and mail to us. Each time a copy of your
letter is included with a grant application we will notilY the board.
In the future we may need to ask water organizations for matching grant money.
However, at this time we only hope you could select a representative from your board to
serve on the celebration planning committee. We promise to have as few meetings as
possible, using email to keep connected.
Looking forward to seeing you all May 16 in Rocky Ford! Please call if you have
any questions or concerns. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

rJhJ ~. C~ l}Pts

Mel and Camille Getz
P.O.
