535

LA PLATA WATER CONSERVANCY DISTRICT

Hesperus, Colorado

November 13, 1956

Ivan Crawford, Director
State Water Board
212 State Office Building
Denver, Colorado

I

Dear Mr. Crawford:

At a meeting of the Board of Directors of La Plata Water
Conservancy District held on November 10, 1956, it was reliably
reported to the Board that although the Animas-La Plata partici-
pating project had originally been scheduled for final author-
izing report in 1960 along with the Dolores Project, a new
schedule had been published stating that the Dolores had been
rescheduled for 1959 and the Animas-La Plata for 1962. The Board
views this with much alarm, and asked me to write to you.

We were overjoyed to have Animas-La Plata included in the
initial list of participating projects (in the Upper Colorado
Development Program) and the directors have been keeping right
up to date on the progress being made. We are now concerned
that there may be a move to drop the project entirely. The re-
sch~duling is not understandable to us.

Knowing that we have had full support fro~ you heretofore,
we are going to impose upon you to help us aga1n. What can we
do to remedy the situation: Will letters to the proper person
from those affected by the project be of assistance. Would at-
tendance by our board or other representatives of the district
at any particular meeting?

We know that undertakings of this magnitude require time,
but there has been no lag in interest on the part of either the
board or the members of the district. This last summer should
have pointed up the emergency which exists in our area in-
sofar as domestic water is concerned. The City of Durango was
nearly forced to install an expensive pumping station and supply
line so as to get water from the Animas River. We cannot gamble
much longer on keeping our people on farms when the drought has
burned them out year after year and there is ample water in the
Animas to remedy the situation.

I

You will earn our eternal gratitude by suggesting things
which we may do as well as by your doing those things which
you can for us~

VICTOR A PAULEK/s
President, La Plata Water Con-
servancy District
