533

CITY OF DURANGO

Durango, Colorado

November 9, 1956

Ivan C. Crawford, Director
Southwestern Colorado Water
Conservation District
State Office Building
Denver, Colorado

Dear Sir:

It has come to our attention that the Animas-La Plata
Diversion Water Development has been set back two years and
the City of Durango is distressed at this development for the
following reasons:

1. The City is growing rapidly and the present water
supply is proving inadequate for the present population.
In 1956 it was necessary to start the curtailment of
use of water as early as May 21st.

2. The City is still under strict water use regulations
and there is no relief immediately in sight.

3. In order to insure proper fire protection and be ready
for a water emergency we are presently building an
emergency pumping station in the Animas River. This
station is not adequate for other than emergency use.

4. In order to assure orderly growth and to attract
business to the area we must have an adequate and
firm water potential for the City. This appeared to
have been solved by the inclusion of the City in the
Animas-La Plata Diversion. However, the two year delay
could very materially hamper the City's progress.

We appeal to you to study the delay carefully and do all
you can for us to step the project up rather than to allow it
to be delayed.

Very truly yours,

M. W. THOMAS! s
City Manager

I

I
