261

WATER CONSERVATION BOARD
MEETING

I

Room 330, State Office
Building

Denver, Colorado
November 10, 1953

1he Meeting was called to order by Mr. Bailey at
1:30 P.M. The Hill Report was distributed to all the
members.

Mr. Bailey explained that there had been a deve-
lopment with reference to the Colorado River Storage
Project that presented problems and he believed that
all had been furnished some information with reference
to this situation. He asked the Director to tell the
Board something about the problem.

Mr. Crawford told the Board that on October 13th
he left Denver to attend the National Reclamation
Association meeting tn Reno, Nevada, and that he was
joined enroute by ~r. Bennett of the Bureau of Re-
clamation. Mr. Bennett indicated that he would like
to talk about certain Colorado problems, one being
the Curecanti project. On re-examination of the
Colorado Hiver Storage Project, Bennett saId it was
found that Curecanti was economically unsound, from
the standpoint of power. Power could be developed
cheaper by coal than by water at that location. With
that information Mr. Crawford returned to Colorado,
notified the members of the Policy and Review Committee
and also the members of the Water Conservation Board,
sending them data which was given to him by the Bureau
of Reclamation. Mr. Riter, Mr. Huffman, from the Bureau
of Reclamation, Mr. Tipton, Mr. Gildersleeve and Mr.
Crawford met and went over these figures.

I

Mr. Bailey informed the Board that Mr. Riter and
Mr. Huffman were present to answer such questions as
might be asked.

Mr. Pughe asked Mr. Crawford if Curecanti could
produce hydro~power at 11 mills.

Mr. Crawford said yes, at the 940,000 acre-feet.
He was also told by Mr. Bennett that the large Curecanti
was right on the edge, but could be classed as economical.
The small Curecanti did not make as ~ood a showing.
