This combination
yields tangiole conservation results and strong learning impact, effectively shaping new
resource use behavior and attitudes. The Learning to be WaterWise Program is
comprehensive, providing all materials, supplies, teaching tools and support needed by
teachers and participants.

.

The program provides a wide range of teaching tools to maximize learning. The
LivingWise™ CD-ROM is a powerful tool to help build new habits and awareness and
the program website is a great resource for students and teachers. Beyond these
computer resources, the Learning to be WaterWise™ program provides videos,
posters, workbooks, and varied activities to reach all types of learning preferences.

PROGRAM RESULTS
Based on a conservative projected showerhead flow reduction of 1.2 GPM, projected
household savings are 7,966 gallons of water and wastewater per year, and 272 kWh of
electricity or 26 therms of gas from reduced water heating needs. For 18,000 Colorado
families, the following annual savings are projected:
. 143,388,000 gallons of water
. 143,388,000 gallons of wastewater
. 4,896,000 kWh of electricity (assuming 40% electric water heat)
. 468,000 therms of gas (assuming 60% gas water heat)
. $892,440 increased disposable family income from utility bill savings
. 8:1 BenefiUCost Ratio for a conservative 5 year evaluation .
. $254/acre foot delivered cost of new water from conservation

PROGRAM BACKGROUND
The National Energy Foundation (NEF) is a 501 (C)3 nonprofit educational organization
which has been developing and distributing energy and environmental education
curricula and school instructional materials for more than 20 years. NEF has become a
national leader in forming partnerships with businesses, education, and departments of
government. The first version of the Learning to be Water Wise and Energy Efficient™
Resource Action Program was introduced in 1992, following extensive market research
and material development. The unique blend of environmental teaching materials
combined with a Resource Action Kit was the first school-to-home, hands-on
conservation program available. Tremendous acceptance caused participation to grow
to more than 300,000 participants within the first few years.

PROGRAM AWARDS
. 1997 EPA Award for Environmental Excellence
.
