ADDITIONAL PUBLIC COMMENTS
CWCB AGENDA ITEM 15h 11/23/99
LEARNING TO BE WATERWISE

To the CWCB Members:

For the past three years, all Bureau of Reclamation offices in Colorado have supported the
National Energy Foundation's Learning to be WaterWise. It is an excellent hands-on program
which not only teaches a lifelong ethic of wise water and energy use, but also quantifies savings
(in dollars and volume of water) for the program sponsors. The Bureau of Reclamation hopes
that CWCB will join us in supporting this worthwhile program.

Dan Crabtree
Water Management Coordinator
Western Colorado Area Office, US Bureau of Reclamation

*.**

Dear CWCB Board Members,

I just re-read the report we received covering the Learning to be WaterWise program we ran
here in Denver, and I hope every community can have such a fine educational, water-saving
program. Please convey my strong support of this idea to those at the meeting of the Colorado
Water Conservation Board on Nov. 23.

Not only did students in our schools learn about water conservation, they became actively
involved in making conservation happen. Their personal involvement and the work they did with
their families will deliver benefits now and in the future. This kind of leveraging of our budget
dollars makes good sense/cents to our utility. I am particularly delighted to see retrofits in
homes where Denver Water's professional audit/retrofit team might never get to visit. I'm also
very pleased with the measured savings aspect of this program.

If anyone at the CWCB would like to discuss Denver's experience with Learning to be
WaterWise, I invite you to contact me directly.

Elizabeth V. Gardener
Manager of Water Conservation, Denver Water
Phone 30~28-6325 FAX 303-628-6349

****

We have used the Learning to be WaterWise program in conjunction with National Drinking
Water Week. I have found the program to be a highly effective tool in our water conservation
program. The concepts are easy to comprehend and the program provides a 'hands-on'
approach for the students outside of the classroom. The participation of the students and their
families has provided our District with a proactive approach to bring water conservation into our
customers' homes. From classroom visits I know that students and teachers LOVE the program!

Fred S. Haslee
Regulations Administrator
Eagle River Water and Sanitation District Vail, CO
