Hatcheries

.0

Federal and state fish and wildlife agencies WIll conduct

research to determine if hatchery-reared fish released into the

Colorado River system will either contribute to the increase 1n

abundance within existing populations or to establishment of new

populations. This will involve release of stocks of hatchery-

reared individuals of appropriate age classes into certain criti-

calor essential habitat areas and extensive monitoring of the

behavior and reproductive success of these individuals in the

wild. The goal will be to evaluate, over the long term, the

effectiveness of hatchery programs in supplementing the recovery

measures. The effectiveness of hatcheries must be established

prior to commitment of resources to a hatchery program.

A research program adopted to evaluate the effectiveness of

. hatcheries shall consider, among other things, the efficacy of

developing rearing channels in which fry could be reared under

conditions approxinlating the natural ellviroIlnlent but from which

predatoc species coulc be e~cluced,

Once reared to a suitable

age, the C;1ClnnE:]S could b(: breClched, permitt.i.ng the fish to

escai)C to [~10 ]-j'..c~'

'i.'h.i.s !;'l~:..~lO,--:O]()q'/ llltlY jlerlnit increased

survivi:'..: \~.:liJe t:\:o'--,11.:lCj p.:.:-ob.l.eJ11~-;) of i:nprinting, disease, and may

be much less eX(Jel1sive tllOIl construction of new 11atcheries.

In no event ''''';': ].1. stocks collected [rom the Green River sub-

basin be introduce'\; into tht: L~olorado Hivcr sub-basin, and vice

verso.

~~i;:li.lal"Jy, :..I:.f-; .(;tOCK~) cllr-rcnl.ly being used for research

likely 2re :10 1 a:"!'>" 9"netically suitable for release to the wild

.

l J
