O..L..L4

parameters for the artesian aquifer is in
progress.

Special emphasis is being placed on
measurement of ground-water recharge, dis-
charge, and storage. The stream measurement
network has Leen enlarged to better determine
the quantity and distribution of surface-water
rim inflow from the surrounding mountains.
Rim inflow is the principal source of re-
charge to the ground-water system. The
ground-water pump age is being determined by
using electrical power consumption data and
evapotranspiration is being estimated by
'finite difference' techniques and other
methods. A network of more than l60 obser-
vation wells is being measured monthly to
define seasonal fluctuations of water levels
and artesian pressure in the unconfined and
confined aquifers.

An electric analog model of the San
Luis Valley has been constructed and is now
being verified. The model will be used to
synthesize data, and to evaluate data collected
during the field phase of the project. It
has been used as an aid in evaluating the
U. S. Bureau of iteclamation's proposed closed
basin salvage proje~t. Future plans call
for using the model to help describe the
interconnection between the confined aquifer
and unconfined aquifer. When the analog
model is completed and verified, it will be
used to predict the effects of changes in
water management practices."

There followed brief questions and answers, and comments
from Board members and Mr. Emery.

MR. STAPLETON:

"Any further questions from members of
the Board? How about members of the
audience? We came down here to discuss in
detail this problem and is there anyone in
the audience who would like to comment on
this subject?"

I

I
