Wayne Allard held a drought assistance meeting on Aug.
27 in Pueblo. Sen. Allard was joined by Gigi Dennis, a former Pueblo West legislator now heading the
U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Office in Colorado; Alan Green, state director of
the Natural Resource Conservation Service; and other federal officials. Allard also announced he is
seeking emergency watershed protection funding. He said $94 million has been added to a federal
appropriations bill to help pay for the recovery of areas ,damaged by wildfires.

Water Security Funding: President Bush has announced that the Administration will not spend the $5
billion Congress approved for homeland security needs, The emergency appropriations included $50
million for small and medium drinking water system vulnerability assessments.

Watershed Grant Program: The EPA has announced that it will be requesting nominations for a $21
million Watershed Initiative to provide assistance to state and local communities to protect and restore
inland and coastal watersheds. Awards will be made for projects to promote and advance efforts in up to
20 watersheds. Project awards will range from $300,000 to $1.3 million.

Because selected watersheds are expected to serve as models, projects that undertake unique, innovative,.
or novel approaches to problem solving will be scored higher.
