494

WASHINGTON COUNTY, COLORADO
Office Of

COUNTY C01,;:USSIONERS

I

Akron, Colorado

Akron, Colorado
August 28, 1956

Colorado Water Conservation Board
State Office Building
Denver, Colorado

Dear Ivan Crawford, Director:

There is a need for geological survey
in Washington County to determine the source and supply
of ground water. The greatest immediate problem is
that of the Cope irrigation well area located in the south-
eastern corner of Washington County. See the report of
preliminary survey made by Alex D. Elkin, geologist which
recommends such a ground water study of the area. A copy
of this report is obtainable from Kenneth W. Chalmers,
State Conservationist, Soil Conservation Service, New
Customhouse, Denver, Colorado.

There are about 50 irrigation wells with about
2150 acres under irrigation. There has been an average
decrease in yield of about 20% in the wells during the
past 5 years. If the rate of water use remains constant
and recharge conditions remain the same, similar declines
in water level can be expected.

There are several other areas in Washington
County with problems directly related to ground water.

It is intended to use the results of this
survey to determine the source of supply of this ground
water and what structures may be necessary to increase the
recharge.

I

For these reasons a complete ground water
study should be made of the area.

S~ncerely yours,
Washington County Commissioners

James E. Lee/s
Wm. J. Krause/s
