487

- 32 -

we are still standing most of the expense
,for these original mistakes. We do want to
show you our needs in the valley for
additional water.

I

You are all familiar with the state
organization and ,the decreeing of water
for irrigation. You are familiar with
the genera!: rule for allocating one
second foot of water for each forty acres
of irrigated land. Here, in our project,
we have felt we could~eliver what we
call 10~o on the basis of one second foot
for fif~y acres and one second foot on
adobe lands. We have done quite well by using
flood water, and later droppirig below,
as our- supply requires. We did well on
that until the acreage approached what
it is now. We have 80,000 irrigated acres
in the Valley. Starting this year, on July
9th, we went to a percentage figure which
indicated we are delivering 6~o of that normal
head of water and except for a day or
two in between we have stayed with that
6~o figure. So that, rather than having
one second foot of water for every fifty
or sixty acres, we are now averaging one
for every ninety acres, and that is an
insufficient water supply. Our crops
are reflecting it. Hay is still growing.
The second cutting of hay was affected. In
many cases no third,'crop. Corn has been
affected; bean crop curtailed. I except
there will be a 25~ loss due t~ drought.
So despite the fact our valley may look
green, we still do not have enough water.

These are things important to you of
the Board and they are important to us. You,
because it is this Board that makes
recommendations as to, the investigation
of projects, and we strongly urge that the
Board put its weight behind further investi-
gation in the Uncompahgre Valley. I believe
there has been some priority accorded the
Yellow Jacket dam site on the Bostwick

I
