<br />oj <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />This was done due to language in the GSDNP statute that required the Secretary to file any <br />claim for water rights to protect the park purposes and values in Colorado State water court <br />and to follow all State procedures. The priority date claimed is November 22,2000. The <br />quantity claimed is all unappropriated ground water within the ground water system <br />underlying the Park necessary to maintain the historical range and average of ground water <br />levels under the Park. This amount wi\1 vary both seasonally and from year to year. The <br />claim recognizes that existing water rights affect the ground water levels and that this right, if <br />decreed, is junior to those water rights existing as of November 22, 2000 and those effects on <br />the aquifer levels. The water right filing has widespread support throughout the San Luis <br />Valley and the Park worked closely with affected water users and the State in crafting the <br />application. <br /> <br />6 <br />
