there. It's an extremely valuable fish.

Are there any questions I can answer?

MR. BURR: You answered mine, thank you.

MR. STAPLETON: Thank you very much.

MR. ADKINS: Where else do you find this Rio Grande Cutthroat?

MR. LANGLOIS: There are a few places in New Mexico where it's found.
But the purity of the population there in those locations-doesn't match
the purity of the Rio Grande that we find in Ricardo Creek. Therefore,
this is the.best re~resentative of the Rio Grande Cutthroat we have.
For that reason, it s the one we should be keeping. It's the one we
'should be using in our restoration programs.

MR. ADKINS: There are no Greenbacks there?

MR. LANGL0IS: It was originally thought'~thatt"these::trout;;}ID5ly::haYe;~])~en
derived from the Arkansas River and that they were Greenback trout.
There is no natural barrier to upstream migration ofoexotic trout. For
that reason we can't say that there are no other trout that have ever
been in the stream, but they are isolated. They are on private.property,
as you know, and there has been no stocking done there in recent times.
For that reason, we suspect that these are very pure Rio Grande Cut-
throat; The Greenbac~ does not occur there.

MR. BROWNELL: I would like to defer action on La Garita Creek. It's
my understanding that they have got an RC&D loan or appropriation to
make a small dam on that creek. And I would like this deferred until
that's done.

MR. STAPLETON: Could we say that it would be deferred until the next
meeting?

MR. BROWNELL: Yes, we can bring it up then and see how the dam has
progressed. Another year would probably be better.

MR. STAPLETON: I just think we owe it to the Division of Wildlife and
to ourselves to keep these things in front of us. Is there any objec-
tion to deferring La Garita Creek and Ricardo Creek until the next
meeting of the Board?

MR. LOWMAN: I am Eugene Lowman. I am.a senior water user out of La
Garita Creek. Why do they ask that this water continue to flow down
to Rio Grande Canal when it's only there in high water years?

MR. STAPLETON: Well, may I suggest, we're going to defer La Garita
Creek until the next meeting. The Fish and Wildlife people are here
and I wish you would get together with them and get an answer. Is that
satisfactory to, you?: ,

MR. LOWMAN: I imagine so.

~30-

I

I
