The San Miguel needs water. As you arc surely aware, Ulis i~ u high~gradient stream with tcw truly deep pools. Lower
gradie'llt rivers have plenty or Irout habitat along cUI bWlks WId in I<lng glides. When the Miguel gets low. the fish
move greal distances 10 tind deep waler. 'l1le problem is most cvidbnt in Murch and April. During these months, it is
possible to walk for miles withoutlinding WlY lish. They're all hw)ched up in a few deep pools, 01' course, there's not
enough room for aU of the lish, so mooy get iced out in shal1()w water. Last summer was the driest in mc..'t11ory. Watc..-r
temperatures hovered in the 70 degree range in the section wt,:'re h~lking about here. Quite a few !ish died. Otht.TS
moved to their favorite winter huunts. AU were tough to catCh. Wpter Hows and water tcmp(,.-ruture are closely linked,
from my experience.

e

~~~FLYRODS
e
November 6, 2000
Mr. Dan McAullil1c, Acting Dircl.:tor
Stream and Lake Protection SCl.:tion
Colorudo Water Conservation Board
I J 13 Shennan Street, Room 721
Denver. The San Miguel is the stream that lured
our owner, St(,.-phen I). PhitUlY, to move the company from Betkeleilo TelluridclMontrose in 1993. Since our move to
Colorado, we've grown to prominence in the lly tishing market. The Scott Company is now one the world's leading
lly rod producers. We employ 50 people locally, and sell our ny rmjs in over 40 countries.
Much of our compuny's marketing revolves around the SWl Miguel "nd other locallisheries. '10e Sun Miguel has been
represented as "our 1'avorite local strewn" dozens of times in adverti~ments, and a gorgeous shot of thQ river was
recenUy used us our I.:atulog cover phnto. I~ach y~ur, We host t.listrib~t(lfs and salel'l representatives frmn allover the
wnrlc.l. They come to visit our company, und to take udvnnluge or postine locullishing.
We also invest deeply in conservation. For example, the Tdhlridc l.'remier Fly Contest is un annual eV\:l\t Ulat wlites
anglers from all over the w()rld ror a commOl\ cause: raise II\0ney t() preserve the San Miguel. Over the years, we've
sponsored dozens of clean~up evenls and even funded a river ftU1gcr position to help the BLM pick up trash Wld run atT
squatters.
While [ write to you now as Murkcting Dircct()r of Scoll fly Rods,' I also write as, a concemed private cilizen, I live on
the hunks o1'the San Miguel (2-Rivers development. Iliulll Valley); and have lished the river at least 30 days per year
since 1987.
My company and I are very concerned about the future 01' the San :Mignel. As you prohably know, the San Miguel is
significantly diverted just belm\' Borscny Creek. The fishing is b?sically terrible below the diversions, despite
receiving virtually no pressure from angl(""l"s. The rancher who ow;ns this property just dug a new diversion near his
upstream boundary, and the fish disappeared. Pleasc don't letthi~ happen lurther upstream.
Thanks for your C<lnsiderution.
-----
SCOTT FLY ROD COMPANY
2355 AtR PARK WAY _
MONTROSE, COLORADO 81401 .,
P,O.
