Rule 4. Definitions: Floodplain Rule Terms Defined. The following definitions are applicable to
these floodplain Designation and Approval Rules. .

Term
Alluvial Fans

Definition
A fan-shaped sediment deposit formed by a stream that flows from a steep
mountain valley or gorge onto a plain or the junction of a tributary stream
with the main stream. Alluvial fans contain active stream channels and
boulder bars, and recently abandoned charmels. Alluvial fans are
predominantly formed by alluvial deposits and are modified by infrequent
sheet flood, channel avulsions and other stream processes.

Approximate
floodplain
information

Floodplain information that significantly reduces the level of detail for
topographic mapping or hydraulic calculations to arrive at floodplain
delineations without a comparison of water surface profiles with a
topographic map of compatible accuracy. The hydrology shall be
compatible with detailed floodplain information.

Base Flood

Synonymous with lOO-year flood and it means a flood having a one
percent chance of being equaled or exceeded in any given year.

Base Flood Elevation
(BFE)

The elevation shown on a FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map for Zones
AE, AH, Al-A30, AR, ARIA, ARlAE, ARlAl-A30, ARlAH, AR/AO, VI-
V30, and VE that indicates the water surface elevation resulting from a
flood that has a one percent chance of equaling or exceeding that level in
any gIven year.

.

Basin

The total land surface area from which precipitation is carried away by a
stream or system of streams under the force of gravity and discharged
through one or more outlets.

Channel

Low lying area where water flows regularly or intermittently with a
perceptible current between observable banks, although the location of
banks may vary under different conditions.

Channelization

The artificial creation, enlargement or realignment of a stream charmel.

Code of Federal
Regulations

(CFR) is the codification ofthe general and permanent rules published in
the Federal Register by the executive departments and agencies of the
Federal Government. It is divided into 50 titles that represent broad areas
subject to Federal regulation. FEMA regulations fall under 44 CFR.

.

4

DRAFT
