Hydrologic Data

After receiving the cooperating agency's biologic recommendation, the CWCB staff conducted
an evaluation of the stream hydrology to determine if water was physically available for an
instream flow appropriation. There are no currently operated or historically operated streamflow
gages for this reach. The closest gage CWCB staff found was the gage located on the San
Miguel River 4.0 miles west of the Bear Creek drainage. The hydrograph was derived from data
collected by the USGS stream gage for the San Miguel River near Telluride, CO (ID
#09171200), which has a drainage area of 42.8 square miles. The drainage area of Bear Creek is
approximately 6.4 square miles. Staff used a basin apportionment method to estimate stream
flows for Bear Creek (See Gage Summary in Appendix C). The period of record for this gage
was 1959 to 1965, the period of record used by staff in their analysis was 1959 - 1965, or seven
years of record. Table 2 below displays the estimated flow of Bear Creek, in terms of a
percentage of exceedence.

Table 2: Estimated Stream Flow on Bear Creek
Exeeedenee Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dee
10/0 2.6 2.9 7.4 15.3 59.5 68.9 61.3 30.2 13.6 7.1 4.9 3.4
50/0 2.5 2.8 4.5 13.2 51.3 61.0 52.7 17.7 10.7 5.8 4.3 2.9
10% 2.4 2.8 3.4 11.5 35.1 52.9 39.5 13.8 9.6 5.6 4.1 2.8
20% 2.4 2.6 2.9 9.0 27.2 45.6 29.6 11.2 8.2 4.9 3.8 2.6
80% 2.1 2.1 2.1 3.2 10.3 19.4 8.1 5.7 4.0 3.4 2.9 2.4
90% 1.9 2.1 2.1 2.4 6.4 17.1 6.6 4.9 3.8 3.2 2.8 2.4
95% 1.9 2.1 2.1 2.4 5.3 14.7 5.9 4.3 3.7 3.2 2.8 1.9
99% 1.9 2.1 1.8 2.3 4.3 11.8 4.8 4.0 3.5 3.1 2.6 1.9

Table 2 shows that the summer recommendation of 6.2 cfs is available at least 50% of the time
from May 15th - August 14th, the summer recommendation was reduced to 4.0 cfs August 15th_
October 14th based on limited water availability.
