MOULDER:

"From the standpoint of putting it in
through wells, we feel at the moment that it
seems more practical, at least from the
physical standpoint, to utilize the spread-
ing technique, particularly in the valleys,
because in general there are no confining
layers, no clay layers, between the surface
and the wat__r table. As a consequence it
should be possible to identify areas where
we can spread the water on any regular basis
when it becomes available or to continue and
perhaps enhance the program of winter irri-
gation which accomplishes the same thing."

I

"Thank you."

"Quincy. "

"Ted, you mentioned the analog model for
the San Luis Valley at phoenix was now pretty
well completed. Of course you don't have
enough data for reliable results but you did
put the Closed Basin project into it to see
what the effect would be. Would you care to
mention what that effect was?"

"I might get shot down by a variety of
people here, but first I'd like to emphasize
the model is a preliminary one. We have a
two aquifer system there; we have a shallow
aquifer and then we have an artesian system
which is below that. We know that the
two are hydraulically connected and any test
on the shallow aquifer system indicates what
the worst conditions are. In my humble
opinion the worst conditions are not particu-
larly bad. As I recall, and I can be cor-
rected on this, the model study showed that
by implementing the full salvage plan, that
the lowering of water level in the active use
area would be somewhat in the neighborhood of
two to four feet. I don't have these figures
at hand and I apologize for that. This did
not seem to be particularly significant,
except to farmers who are concerned about
subirrigation.

I
