This graphic was presented to the Joint Meeting of the Colorado Flood Task Force and Water Availability
Task Force in Mid May 2003 at the Office of Emergency Management offices in Golden, Colorado,
Klaus Wolter, a noted German Meteorologist, and forecaster for the NOAA - Climate Diagnostics Center,
pointed out the conspicuous green part ofthe Colorado River watershed during his presentation and stated
that this is where they are cloud seeding and its the Blue River Basin and stated "Zee cloud zeeders must
be happy", This is close to the center of the target area of the Denver Water Program, This area is key to
filling Dillon Reservoir and streamflow to the rest of their collection system of reservoirs, This graphic
might be good evidence that cloud seeding is working in the Central Rockies.

Silver Iodide measurements report: this report was just completed and was mailed to the CWCR It
arrived on July 21 and the staff has not had time to read and! or comment on it. CWCB staff thought it
was important to include the newspaper article for discussion at the July 2003 Board meeting, CWCB
staff will update the board in future director's report once we have had a chance to review the report.

Vail Program: Vail is Colorado's oldest
continuous program and has operated for over 20
years, For the 2002-03 season a total of 38 events
were seeded over 81 days. The total seeding hours
were 4808 using 28,218 grams of Agl.

Vail Ski Area Analysis, Western Weather
Consultants: An April 2001 study by Western
Weather Consultants of Durango completed an
analysis of Regional SNOTEL and Ski Area data at
the Vail Ski area over 10 seasons of precipitation
data, This analysis showed an adjusted 24,5%
increase of precipitation on seeded days over what
was expected to have occurred, The favorable
directions for seeding were from West through
Northwest. Storms from the West yielded wetter
snow and storms from the north yielded more snow depths and densities,

This program in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is
generators, This program has been essentially
deregulated from reporting and permit renewal
requirements from lack of controversy or interest.
Current operators are required to notify the public
every five years in the newspaper that operations
are still ongoing. Does the high snow water
equivalent levels conclusively prove that cloud
seeding works? No, but it could be positive
evidence that operations have boosted snow water
equivalent levels in both areas,

nearly 30 years old and uses remotely operated

~t. ,-;;Ii.,,..

~

.

.

~

!l

~
.

,\lit.

San Juan Mountains Program
The Western San Juan Weather modification
program started in 2000 and was expanded in 2002 .
to include the Eastern San Juan Mountains as well,
Includes the Upper Dolores, La Plata,
Hermosa/Animas, Florida and Pine River drainage basins and the Durango Mountain Ski Resort areas,
8
