\-

e

e

e

September 6, 1991

CITY OF BROOMFIELD
GREAT WESTERN RESERVOIR REPLACEMENT PROJECT
FACT SHEET FOR COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD

This fact sheet has been prepared for the Colorado Water
Conservation Board to inform th~ Board of the need for a new source
of water supply for the city of Broomfield and on the status of the
city's current water supply planning activities. It is the intent
of the city to request financial assistance of the Board in January
of 1992. The following fact sheet describes the events leading to
the decision to develop a new source of water supply and provides
a conceptual overview of the proposed Great Western Reservoir
Replacement Project.

PREVIOUS APPLICATIONS TO CWCB
In 1983 and again in 1986, the city of Broomfield applied to
the Colorado Water Conservation Board for loans for improvements
and expansions to Great Western Reservoir. Both loans were-
recommended by the ewCB and approved by the General Assembly. The
last application (which was a revision to the 1983 application) was
approved for funding in S.B. 27 of the 1986 session of the General
Assembly in the amount of $4.6 million.
The City has not utilized these funds nor made any significant
improvements to Great Western Reservoir due to cleanup and
environmental considerations at the Rocky Flats site. The city
will instead request financial assistance for the Great Western
Reservoir Replacement Project as described below.

NEED FOR THE PROJECT
The communities surrounding the Rocky Flats Nuclear Plant have
long-standing concerns about Rocky Flats' potential to affect their
drinking water:

1

."T~-._.>I-., .'~_.____~___ ......_".~_...'.....h-"._'_ .~_,~,^,,,,,,<-,-,__~__,,,~._-,,;__,,,"",,,",,. _................~...-"..............-.;..;.~--............-._.~__~~~_..........__..oo<-....
