<br />CALIFORNIA <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />CALIFORNIA: URBAN WATER CONSERVATION PROGRAM <br /> <br />SYNOPS:S <br /> <br />Historv <br /> <br />:he Ur~an Water Conservation progra~ was established in fiscal <br />year 1975-76 to focus on action programs to more efficiently use water, thereby <br />stretching existing supplles as an L~portant element in meeting California's <br />water needs. <br /> <br />L~ August 1976, as the drought continued, DWR began a <br />significantly expanded water conservation effort offered primarily to ur~an <br />users. Pilot plumbing conservation programs were conducted in six widely <br />differing cO!lllllmi ties in the sunmer and fall of 19i7 in response to AB 380 <br />(Chapter 28, Statutes of 19i7l. Bulletin 191, with eight supporting <br />appendices, reported on those programs. The first model urban water <br />conservation aemonstration garden was planted in Sacramento. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />After the drought, the Urban Water Conservation program emphasis <br />shifted to a continuing effort carried out in cooperation with local water <br />districts. Aasistance is provided to water districts and local <br />co~ities in the planning, development, and implementation of voluntary, cost- <br />effective programs. <br /> <br />As a result of a contract with the State Water Resources Control <br />Board, grants were made to local districts for the detection of water <br />distribution system leaks which the local districts repaired. This contract <br />also provided for assistance to water rignts applicants and Clean Water Grant <br />recipients in the preparation of water conservation plans. <br /> <br />Information is provided to water agencies, municipalities, and <br />the public through newsletters, exhibits, the resource center, and public <br />info~tion ma~erials. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />1"7 <br />J..... <br />
