\

COLORADO BASIN

, Basinwide Conditions Assessment
The SWSI value of -1.0 indicates that for February
the basin water supplies were below normal. The Natural
Resources Conservation Service reports that March 1
snowpack is 93% of normal. Flow at the gaging station
Colorado River near Dotsero was 569 cfs, as compared to
the long-term average of 985 cfs. Storage in Green
Mountain, Ruedi, and Williams Fork reservoirs totaled 45%
of normal as of the end of February.
February precipitation was well above average for
the Colorado River Basin.

Outlook
Stream flow forecasts. which had dropped to 75% of
average for the basin last month increased to 80% of
average with the February snowfall. Plateau Creek runoff
forecasts continue to lag behind the rest of the basin with
only 70% of average expected.

Administrative/Manaoement Concerns
The senior Shoshone power plant call in Glenwood
Canyon remained on throughout the month of February. In
response to the continuing drought, some irrigators are
calling for water very early this year. This forces water
administrators to judge whether these early season
diversions are being put to beneficial use, Le. is this cold
water really helping a crop grow in March at elevations
above 6,000 feet?

Mar-03

SWSl HSTalV

..
~

w
::>
-'
<(
> 0
x
w
o
Z
--1
>
0::
o
-2

4

..

....95 JIn.96 JIn-f11 Ja1..9B _99 Jal.OO JIn.01 JIn.Q2 -.00
""""'''"'''

700,000 - --

COLORADO RIVER NR COTSERO, FlOW BY WATER YEAR

600,000
j
~ 500,000
u
<0:
~ 400,000
...J
u.
~ 300,000
~
~ 200,000
=>
u
100,000

a;
.l!l
~ 50.000
'"
0;
~ 40,000
en
:lJ 30,000
'"
on
=>
20,000

7

8:>,000

70,000

Nov

Dee

Feb

March

Jan

Ap/il

-e-WET(1984)

-+- DRY (2002)

"*- 2003

__AVG

REPRESENTAllVE RESER\IOIRS

&1,000

10,000

o

Gem Mmlain

R.oed

WIIiam; Fak
III 02I2llI03 Ca1tenls

IAIg. 02I2IlCa1ten1s
