580

I

The rate of increase of the cooperative program is, of
course; contingent upon the availability' of Federal fun9s for
.50-50 matching with State funds. The Bureau of the Budget
has already established a teiling on the, funds to be
made available to the Geologica.1 Survey in fiscal year 1958
and, before the State Legislature adjourns next spring,
the ceiling for fiscal year 1959 probably will have been
established. It is urgent, therefore, that I be in a
position to advise our Washington office at the earliest'
possible date concerning major increases in State offerings
for matching with Federal funds for cooperative ground-
water studies. I believe that with early notification
the Survey may be able to match a moderate increase in
funds over and above the $40,000 anticipated in fiscal
year 1958 and if the State budget for fiscal year 1959
can be made known before the Bureau of the Budget estab-
lishes the ceilings for fiscal year 1959, I am confident
that the Geological Survey can match a greatly increased
amount of funds in fiscal year 1959.

If you have questions about the enclosed estimates,
please do not hesitate to call me.

Very truly yours,

Thad G.
