will involve improvement of the South platte
channel, enlargement of the South Platte
channel, probably restoration of the Lower
Cherry Creek channel, because you do have
Goldsmith Gulch that can contribute extreme
flooding to the Lower Cherry Creek channel in
spite of Cherry Cre~~ Dam. This is below
Cherry Creek Dam.

vlithout trying to take too much of your
time here, I believe you see our problem and
our desires to develop a high degree of protec-
tion for Denver. We are stfll faced with
economic criteria. I am sure now that in the
light of this disaster, we c~n convince the
Bureau of the Budget and other national inter-
ests that we do have a problem here; that
economics notwithstanding, we should protect
Denver. This is a major city. vIe cannot
tolerate this flood threat to Denver any
longer. "

like to ask.on the Arkansas. I am sorry I
took so much' time on the questions. Frank, do
you have SOme thoughts?"

"Yes, I do. I see there has been lots of
planning up in the Platte area and I think the
Arkansas has got to have some immediate plan-
nin'i doWn'. there. I think it. was only by sheer
luck that"we didn't have a' lot worse flood
than'we did. On Thursday night Timpas Creek
peaked at'about 20,000 and about four o'clock
the 'next morning the Apishapa: put a little over
six feet over our dam. One ran down before
the otherhit. Then the next evening at about
5:30 we put 7.9 feet.overour dam and the only
thing that didn't wash it out, it went around
our dike . Had they peaked all at once you
wouldn't'even have La Junta on the map now.
