." ,'"",

1. 0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION & O~IVES

'!he Western Kansas Groundwater Managerrent District #l
(WKGMD) is planning to =ndtd: a weather rrodification program
in southwest Kansas during the spring and sumrer of 1978. '!his
is a =ntinuation of the MUDDY ROAD PROJECI' =nducted in the
growing seasons of 1975, 1976, and 1977 in which thirteen
=unties have entered into an agreerrent with the WKG1D to jointly
finance voeather rrodification operations. Planning and rranage-
!TEnt responsibilities rest with the WKG1D #l at S=tt City.

'!he primary objective of the program is to =nduct rain
augrrentation and hail suppression operations fran April 15
through Septanber 15, 1978, in the specified area using aerial
application of silver iodide nucleating material.

A se=ndary objective is to acquire data related to
daily seeding operations and storm activity and store it in a
form suitable for later analysis.

2.0 OPERATING AREA

2.1 Primary Target

'!he primary weather rrodification targets are
the agricultural lands in the 13 participating =unties shown in
FigUre 1.

2.2 Area of Influence

In the nonna1 =nduct of seeding operations it
is expected that seeding material release will take place up-
wind of the intended target area, and that sore of the seeding
effects may extend downwind of the primary target. Fran the
foregoing, it can reasonably be expected that the area of influence
would be approximately 15 miles ur:wind and 25 miles c30.vnwind of
the primary target. On the basis of prevaiIing winds this would,
in general, be the shaded area of Figure 1.
