positions are also documented via an 8mm time-'lapse C3mera system
mounted over a second PPI display dedicated for this pUl~pose.

Drawn on the PPI used for main viewing is a semi-permanent
outline of the target area boundaries as well as the counties BTld the
positions of some of the larger population centers. Also, there are
lines for each ten degrees of the compass using the Garden City VOR as
the primary aircraft navigational aid. Range marks have also been put
on the compass lines so that distance and direction from the VOR is
immediately available to relay ~~ the seedin~ aircr~ft at any time.

Although radar quickly measures many cloud features, it is
necessary to correct the obtained numbers for. errors introduced
largely due to the distance of the cloud from the radar. Newly
incorporated into program operations this year was the addition of a
Tandy computer Model 1000 which.quickly performed many such corrective
and evaluational functions. It was an invaluable aid during
operations in 1986. Programming of the computer was performed by Mr.
Ray Luhman, from Northwest Kansas GMD 84, in Colby.

D. AIRCRAFT SEEDING OPERATIONS

Three cloud base seeding aircraft and one cloud-top seeding
aircraft were used during the 5-month period of operations. The
cloud-top aircraft, a turboprop AeroCommander, was leased from Aero
Systems for 60 flight hours, or 3 months---whichever came first.

The three aircraft owned and operated by W~(GMD ~1 in 1986 were
two-single engine Piper Aircraft Comanches} PA24-250 type, an~ one
single engine Piper' Aircraft Comanche, PA24-260. .

All three WKGMD #1 aircraft were equipped with a liquid fuel
generator mounted to each wing tip which contained approximately 6
gallons of the new silver iodide-acetone solution. It burned silver
iodide at the rate of two grams per minute of operatiorl. The aircraft
were flown on an as-needed basis---available 24 hours a day during the
season. These aircraft worked only at cloud base in the preferred
updraft areas of tt1e clouds. The planes were based at the towns of
Lakin} Ulysses, and Scott City duril1g the 1986 season.

The fourth aircraft, an AeroCommander, leased from Aero Systems}
IY1C.} was used to dispense dry ice directly into the supercooled parts
of clouds. It was equipped wit.h a dispenser tl~ automatically release
dry ice pellets at a rate of one pou~j per minute of flight. This
aircraft and crew were based at the Dodge City Airport during the
season and available as needed on a 24-hour a day basis.

The WKWM COY1Cept under which seeding operations are conducted are
similar to many other programs of this nature: The meteorologist
makes the operatiOl"lal decisions to launch and to position the seeding
aircraft and issues seeding instructions and flight termination. All
seeding is perfol~med under positive cOfltrol by the radar meteorologist
with the pilots providirlg important inputs in the identification of
targets of opportunity and other specific clolJd information.

13
