ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Since 1980, for the months April through September, daily
rainfall has been recorded by over 100 volunteer observers
throughout much of Western and Southwestern Kansas. Each month the
observers mail in their forms to our field headquarters in Lakin
where the data are put into our computer files. There is usually
only one official rainguage per county reporting to the National
Weather Service, so this added information between official guages
gives us the ability to determine more accurately what the moisture
picture really looks like across in Western and Southwestern Kansas
and helps us pinpoint areas where rainfall is lacking or abundant.
Also, many observers write poignant daily comments in the "Remarks"
part of the form, providing additionally important information used
to fill in our knowledge gaps on post-operational analyses for some
particular days of interest. From the rainfall data sent in to us
we are able to create the rainfall analyses presented in this
yearly final report. In time, we believe we may be able to help
corroborate or refute any future statistical analyses of rainfall
for this area.

To those of us connected with the Weather Modification Program
these observers can best be described as having been steady,
persistent and insightful individuals during their years. of
reporting---on occasion some even provide us with grim humor,
meteor logically-speaking, that is. Sadly, as can be expected with
the passage of time, some observers have had to leave the network,
for a variety of personal reasons.

However, this year it is to all these past and present
rainfall observers that we give our long-overdue public r~cognition
and heartfelt thanks. Their long-term efforts of providing us rain
data has contributed in an important way to the success of the
Western Kansas Weather Modification Program and, hopefully, will
result in a better economic base and improved quality of life for
those of us living in Western and Southwestern Kansas.

A great deal of thanks goes out to my assistant meteorologis"C
this year, Eric Howieson, who was responsible for entering the
large amount of historic crop-hail insurance and crop data into our
computer records and for creating the graphic displays presented in
Section VII which relates to that information.

55
