1997 WKWMP May ~ August

Total Precipitaion

]
I
I

Fig. 6

over 21 inches for the four-month period. Other significant rainfall
maximums la.y in Sheridan and Sherman counties where respective
rainfall was over 17 inches and almost 16 inches, respectively.
Although rainfall data are few immediately east of our target area,
it appears rainfall may have been somewhat less just east of it. It
is doubtful this effect can be linked to seeding since hail damage
generally appears to be much lower in many of the central and
eastern counties of the state this season, with the exception of
Marshall. Most likely the less "apparent" rainfall is the result of
fewer storms. In any event it's clear there was more severe storm
activity in Western Kansas compared to most of the Central and
Eastern sections of the state. More storms generally translate into
more rainfall, but what the translation is in this case is unknown.

39
