IV. OPERATIONAL SUMMARY - 1997

Table 1 summarizes 1997 WKWMP operational flight and seeding
information plus all days upon which crop-hail insurance claims were
reported. Each flight day was broken down into whether the day was:

R.~.to increase Rain only

H...to reduce Hail only

C...Combined, to increase rain and reduce hail, both

O...Qbservation---cloud examination, no seeding performed

Other pertinent information relating to operations are to be
found in the back of this report in the following appendices:

(1) Appendix A - Historic Project Operational Activity Summary
(seeding and observation flights)

(2) Appendix B - Historic Monthly Number of seeding Days for
Hail and/or Rain Augmentation

(3) Appendix C - Historic County Weather Modification
Participation

(4,) Appendix D - NOAA Form 17 - 4A, Final Report on 1997
monthly seeding activities

With the WKWMP expansion into Northwest- Kansas, -tlire-e~more
aircraft were added to our program bringing its total to nine. All
three of the added planes were cloud base seeding aircraft,
increasing the total number of that particular aircraft from 5 to
8, all of which are single-engine Piper Comanches. The remaining
aircraft assigned to the program was the twin-engine Piper Navajo.

Operationally, there were 74 seeding days in 1997 within the
WKWMP. It's difficult to compare 1997 to previous years because of
such a greatly enlarged target area and having increased our
aircraft numbers. It's fair to say the larger the size of the WKWMP
target area, the greater will become the average number of both the
seeding days and hail-days experienced each season. For example, if
the target area were the same this year as last, without Stevens
County, there would have been 63 seeding days this season, not 74.
In the former WKWMP the year would have been the third highest in
number of seeding days in its 23 seasons. There were 47 seeding days
in the Northern target area, one totally inside Colorado, with 9
days in which seeding was performed in the Northern target area, but
not in the Southern target area. In the Southern target area there
were 25 days in which seeding was done while none was performed in
the Northern target area. Out of the 74 seeding days, 38 days (51%)
had flights common to both areas.

22
