2

Upper Gunnison Water Conservancy District to complete the equipment expenditures for
this site.

3. Installation of the Grayback SNOTEL site. This site is located in the Rio Grande basin
near the divide between the mainstcm oflhe Rio Grande and the headwaters ortlle
Canejas River. Similar to the other sites, this site was located near the existing Grayback
snow course. This snow course has been manually measured since 1967 and can provide
extremely difficult access during years with heavy snowfall. This course is also an
important site which correlates very well with runofTat several forecast points within the
Rio Grande basin. Using the ewes funds, and the additional funding provided by the
Rio Grande Conservation District this site will help provide valuable snowpack
inlomlatioll for watcr managers in the Rio Grande basin for years to come.

As you can see from the above cxamples, CWCS Sevcrance Tax Trust Funds were utilized to
help leverage local funding which will assist local water uscrs and the NRCS in water
management activities. The total gnmt of515,OOO was used to leverage an additional 525,500 in
local funding. The NRCS has contributed the in-kind assistance of installation, and ongoing
operation and maintenance of these sites into the future.

Thanks again for your assistance and help in providing this valuable assistance to these local
water management groups. As I mentioned above. without this grant. it's unlikely that these sites
would have been installed. I am sure that these new SNOTEL sites will help provide valuable
infonnation to \....ater users in these basins for many years to come. It is through opportunities
like this that allow liS to continuc 10 consider our program as the Cooperative Snow Survey
Program of the NRCS.

Sincerely,

MICHAEL A. GILLESPIE
SIlO\.... Survey Supcrvisor
