','

":.,

closer to the Colorado state line. Seeding began in this new area
at 4:41 p.~. Three aircraft seeded this new line of storms until
4:55 p.m.---when updrafts began dililappear.i.ng. One plane left to
join in seeding in NE stanton---which was the storm earlier near
Big Bow---leaving the other two to continue seeding from near
Syrac~se to Coolidge until 4:58 p.m. The cloud top aircraft was
unable to get .i.nto the proper parts of the line of storms acr~ss
wast-central Hamilton at 4:49 p.m. due to hail aloft being cast
into its seeding path; so, it also went to NE stanton where it
seeded briefly at 5:10 p.m. S~all hail was thrown into its seeding
area on that storm as well. With overall new storm growth and
intensification ebbing, the cloud top plane was sent bact to its
Dodge City base at 5:13 p.m. '

At 5:11 p.m. one plane located strong new updrafts on a new
storw again near Coolidge and seeding for hail then began. A seoond
plane joined at 5:20 p.m.; radar indicated hail in the cloud at
5:22 p.m. The other two cloud base planes seeding in northeast
Stanton were sent to assigti however, when they arrived the cloud
already had begun dissipating almost as quickly as it had developed
having no significant updrafts indicative of hail development.
Seeding was scaled back at between 5:45 p.m. and 5:51 p.m., as each
of the two planes seeding that area ended; a third plane continued
to seed weak updrafts for rainfall stimulation until 6:10 p.m.
Total flight time today during operations was ll~9 hours.

MAY 24th, OPE~~IONAL O~y #10: The operational day began shortly
after midn:l.ght to perfontl rain stimulation in southern Haskell
County. One aircraft scrambled at 12:25 a.m. and intermittently
seeded a single cloud from 1:04 to 1:24 a.m. but the cloud was weak
and did not persist. '

In the afternoon, around 3 p.m., severa) vigorous new storms
began developing in S(':!o,tt County. Mere severe stO!'ll1s already. had
developed in Logan and Gove counties and were moving southeasterly
toward WiChita, Scott and Lane counties. All planes were scrambled
between 3:03 and 3:08 p.m. Cloud base seedi.ng began in south-
central Scott at 3:38 p.m.i two other clond base planes and the
cloud top aircraft joined in seeding two storms in Scott County
between 3:42 and 3:55 p.m., whereas, at 3:42 p.m. one l.ast cloud
bee plane began seeding north of Scott county in Gove---where cloud
tops there were measured at 60 thousand feet at 4:17 p.~. The Gave
storm was reported as collapsing at 4:28 p.m.---cloud base updrafts
were non-existent and a gust front was pushed out to the sOllth.
,This gust front later appeared to affect storm intensification
significantly further south in Finney, Gray, HaSkell and Ford
counties. When an appanmt "lull" is storm growth occurred during
this time one aircraft landed briefly to do maintenance on one ot
its wing generators and was airborne again soon. Seeding continued
in several parts of Scott County on different storms through 5:15
p.m. and continued onto other storms newly develop1ng in north-
central and eastern Finney County, north of Ingalls, where III very
severe storm developed.
