.\

,
. ,

."')

,

By 9:30 p.ro. a large storm compl~x, which had formed earlier
in northeast Colorado, was near Arapahoe and moving southeasterly
toward Greeley County. S$eding began 10:31 p.m. with all aircraft
concentrating on it. There were multiple cells within the largQ
complex, aome of which were located behind the primary area of
seeding and throwing hail into area$ where seeding or.dinarily would
have been performed. The storm moved from SQllthwest Greeley across
Syracuse doingO devastating hail damage, then furthar southeast
across southeastern Hamilton, southWestern Kearny, northwestern,
central and southeastern Grant, and southwest Haskell. As seeding
finished around Grant and Haskell counties between 1: 02 and 1:1'
a.llI. (June 10th), aircraft were low on seeding agent and fUEll.
During this period of seeding this large complex of storms, other
severe storms built in eaatern Hamilton and western Stanton
counties. The western Stanton storms WeL~ dttenuated on radar and
not identified as strongly hail producing at the time. The Stanton
storms passed southeast and may have bean r.Gspon3:1.ble for the large
hail reports later in Liberal.

Two a.ircraft were
building in southwest
unsuitable for seeding
flight time for the day

scrambled at. :3: 18 a. m. for new storms
Greeley County, however, clouds werQ
and the flights were terminated. Total
was 32.0 hourll

June 10th/ 11.th =-9EE~.J'_1Q~t.~._ P-!\YS /tp / # 1~: Mid-afternOon severe
thunderstorms began forming in northeast Colorado; all available
planes were scrambled at 2:48 p.m. When saeding began at 3:32 p.m.,
the oore of the storm was 10 miles northwest of Sharon Springs and
rooving southeaaterly. The storm entered the target area around
3:010 p.m. All aircraft seaded the storm as it moved southeast
except for the cloud top aircraft. Air traffic control would not
allow the aircraft to work outside of a 60 mile radius of Garden
City due to nl-illtary llU!neuversof some sort. So, the cloud top
plane had to wait for a.lmost a half-hour until the storm llIoved
closar. A hail streak about a half-mila wide was noted on the
ground across northwest Greeley County and into Wallace County.
This storm was slnd.lar to othe.t' vBt:yl.=irge storms in that th9ro
were mult:lple cores within the complex producing hail, BOml!! of
which could not be saed~d because of their position within the
storm oomplex. The complex began weakening around 5 p.m. and by
5:43 p.m. the storm had all but diss.i.pated so that all planes were
able to terminate their flights. Skies cleared afterward.

Later in the evening, around 10:55 p.m~, planes were again
scrambled to a rapidly building group of storms building in eastern
Colorado, adjacent to Grgeley County. During the next seven hours
new savere storms development seemed chaotic ~s they built randomly
over Greeley, Hamilton, Grant, Kearny, W.ichita and Finney countiea.
Seeding began at tl:30 p.m. in Greeley County and continued over
all the previously roentioned counties until 5:57 a.m., Jun$ 11th.
Total flight time for the day was 23.4 hours.
