Y--

DI
SC
I AX
F
FOR ToRE PERIOD JUNE 26 - JULY 2, lSS4 ~

E
General Interes~: Whatever happened to our weather in
the Mr. Pinatubo volcanic eruption in the Philippinee in June 1991?
Two years ago in our Newsletter (#92-18) we presented an article
froln the American Meteorological Society Bullet:l..n about the current
theory at the time that the VOlcanic ash cast into the atmosphere
was causing glob&l cooling around the world. Probably we still
remember in Kansas our wet summer of 1992 and the r.eoord, or near
record, snowfall for the winter of 1992-93 ~ollowed by thewette~
Bummer of 1993 and a July whioh was the coolest, or near coolest on
record fo~ most p~rts of Kansas. In that article two years ago it
wass~aLea tha~ tne authors were estimating "...the cooling effect
would bottom should bottom out in about two years and disappear
completely in 4 to 5 years if the earth's 'temperature responds
similarly to what it did following the 1982 eruption of the Mexican
volcano, El Chich on. " . . .

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
94~9

well, here we are two years later and, by all accounts, it
sure seems summer temperatures and moisture in Kansas is looking
like it's old ael!. The meteorological world is learning more
about climato and weather all the time. The interrelationships
among the various fluids (air and water) on earth and the
activities occurring within those fluids when combined with solar
radiation effects present S01l1e highly complex processes to make
sense of, to say the least. As time passes, progress will be made
~n our understanding of the processes and fluid interrelationships
which combine to produce our .weather patterns both for the short
term and long term, however, as with any science, the more we learn
about something, we usually find out there is still much, much more
we don't know.

OPERATIONS: This was a week in which Western Kansas thunderstorms
were formed because of high surface temperatures, abnormal amounts
of. low levellTioieture, surface troughs in the "~rylinen zona, upper
troughs and strong low level winds combining in various ways to
affect us repeatedly. Fortunately, an important missing ingredient
in all this was the lack of upper winds of jet stream velocity---
except for one of the days. Lacking strong upper level winds, the
very large, persistent storms and supercells didn't present
themselves. All times are Central Daylight Time.

~ 29th - OPERATIONAL DAY i23: By 2 p.m. incipient severe storms
were al~eady building along the Kansas - COlorado state line west
of Hamilton county about 10 miles south of Bolly, Colorado, and,
separately, southwest of Goodland. General movements were to the
southeaet around 35 - 40 mph. All planes were scrambled between 2
p.m. and 2:19 p.m. Three planes were sent first to the developing
etorm near Holly; two aircraft began seeding it at 2:37 p.m. and
2:45 p.m., respectively, by which time it had moved into south-
western Hamilton county. The third plane was diverted toward the
