, ,

.

8.0 OPERATIONAL PLAN

a. Statement of the Nature and Objectives of Proposed Project

\

The general objective of the research is to more precisely document and

define natural and modified physical processes that occur in Rocky Mountain

orographic clouds. The research includes investigations over both primary

and secondary mountain barriers and their respective downwind valleys.

Some of the key critical questions related to weather modification

technology are to be emphasized by this CSU research. The resolution of

these problems isiimportant for further progress in appraising the value of
'--

weather modification, and for effectively and safely carrying out operational

programs by private and government weather modification groups. Specific

problems being addressed in the CSU research program relate to the

detailed description of cloud microphysical processes in natural and modified

~-------_.

clouds: The specific experiments which involve cloud seeding are designed to

study the rate of ice crystal formation by various cloud seeding materials in

use in weather modification operations. The proposed research builds on all

past weather modification and cloud physics research for winter orographic

clouds in the Colorado Rockies.

The specific objectives of the proposed researoh program are:

To improve the understanding of cloud processes and changes which

result from cloud seeding.

., To evaluate the specific changes in seeded clouds as compared with

non-seeded clouds.

b. Map of the Area and the Area Reasonably Expected to be Effected
A map showing the primary and secondary areas to be effected is provided

as Attachment 1.
