:\

The seeding solution consists (by weight) of approximately 97 percent acetone
(C3H60), 2 percent silver iodide (AgI), 0.6 percent ammonium iodide 1:NH4I), and 0.4
percent water (lIP). The AgI is the active ingredient, the NH.I allows the AgI to go
into solution with the acetone. These ingredients were purchased by the NCWCD.
NCWCD personnel mixed the solution and recharged the ground generators as needed
during the winter season.

Operation of the unit is fairly simple. The propane is turned on at the propane
tank by a local operator. A second valve on the propane line may be present at the CNG
unit, and, if so is also turned on. Once the propane flows through the CNG unit it is
ignited in the burn chamber (usually by using a striker). The flowmeter valve is then
adjusted so that the required amount of solution is sprayed into the burn chamber and
consumed by the flame. The prescribed setting on the flow meter allows the solution to
burn at a rate of approximately .12 gallons an hour which in turn means that the silver
iodide (AgI) in solution, is burned at a rate of approximately eight (8) grams an hour.
The propane is consumed at a rate of one-half gallon an hour.

Winter stonns that move into Colorado are nonnally accompanied by winds
blowing from northwesterly through southwesterly directions. The CNG's therefore are
located upwind of the northwest, west and southwest edge of the target in order to take
advantage of these winds to carry the seeding material up into the stonn clouds over the
intended target region. Fifteen different sites are used, with locations in an arc from
south of the target through west and then northwest. Due to the terrain of the area,
distance from the target ranged from approximately 3 to 20 miles. All fIfteen CNG sites
are located at private residences. Figure 1.1 shows the location of each of these sites.

3.2 Office Facilities

For the 1993-94 program NAWC's Salt Lake OffIce was equipped to receive
National Weather Service (NWS) infonnation through an Alden satellite system.
