.'

:

I
I
WESTERN WEATHER CONSULTANTS, INC.

'.

NORTH-CENTRAL COLORADO
OPERATIONAL SEEDING SUMMARY

A State seeding permit was granted to Western Weather
Consultants, Inc. for the North-Central Program on November
9, 1978. The first seedable weather system moved across
the seeding area on November 10, 1978. A total of 37 ground-
based cloud nuclei generators were installed around the
mountain barriers in the North-Central Colorado Program area
to be seeded. These generators were manually operated and
utilized silver iodide as the nucleating agent.

There was seeding of cloud systems over the North-Central
mountain watersheds on all or portions of 32 out of 70 cal-
endar days during the November 9, 1978 through January 28,
1979 period before seeding operations were temporarily sus-
pended. Limited research seeding was performed for the
Colorado State University Atmospheric Science Department from
February 14, 1979 through March 3, 1979 near Steamboat Springs
Colorado; Operational seeding was again permitted during the
period from March 14, 1979 through March 31, 1979 under more
restricted areal and weather conditions. Seeding was accom-
plished only on a portion of one day during this latter time
period.

The following tables show the monthly dates when seeding
operations were initiated, the number of generators utilized
in each seeding operation, the total hours of seeding, the
seeding rates, and the total output of s~lver iodide utilized
during each seeding operation for both the operational and
research programs.

The total number of operational seeding hours completed in
the North-Central Program area during the contracted 1978-
1979 winter period was 5,998.50 hours, consuming a total of
71,865 grams of silver iodide. As noted from the frequency
of seeding operations, the seeding opportunities were ample
this winter season, especially over the Central and Western
slopes.

with two consecutive winters with above normal precipitation
recorded in this region, the water outlook is encouraging.
The observed snowpacks in the Northern mountains ranged from
about 120 to 145 percent of normal, while in the Central
mountains the snowpacks ranged from about 140 to 165 percent
of normal on April 1, 1979.

No formal evaluation of this season's seeding results is planned.
