An ice part.icle passes <br />through the focused image of an incandescent <br />lamp and scatters light into two silicon solar <br />cells, roughly 2 cm square each. The output <br />from the celIs is fed into a portable cassette <br />tape recorder. Particles passing through the <br />light beam cause variations in the solar cell <br />output which have a frequency in the 5 to 10 <br />khz range and are recorded as "clicks" on the <br />cassette tape. <br />
