-~.

.'-

"

FOREWARD AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

As the 1985 season comes to a close in mid-September, most of southwest

Kansas has received recent rains sufficient to get the winter wheat crop

off to a great start for 1986. Undoubtedly, these rains will greatly

influence the overall precipitation figures for the year, probably indi-

eating above average rainfall over much of southwest Kansas for 1986. At

the Lakin airport, for instance, rainfall over the approximate 36-hour

period of September 10 and 11 produced 5.30 inches - fully 40% of the annual
,

6 - month average from April through September!

As project director, I wish to extend my appreciation to WKGMD #1,

Keith Lebbin and Neta Wheeler for their assistance during the season, in

particular in the assembling, editing and production of this final report.

Also, appreciation is extended to my assistant meteorologist, Matthew

G~rard, for his laborious compilation of over 10,000 hail damage insurance

claims, and oVer 500 area rainfall reports during the 1985 season. Without

this information, some of the more important analyses performed by him and

many graphic displays found in this report would have been impossible.

Finally, my appreciation goes out to all the WKWM pilots and to their

respective support bases at Dodge City, Scott City, Ulysses, and Lakin -

their efforts will never be fully recognized.

Curtis D. Smith
Program Director

~.

,'-
