~.

.r

their cloud observations as a means of early identification of developing

severe storms and making decisions to launch aircraft.

When it is visually impossible to see developing or moving severe storms,

radar becomes necessary in detecting and tracking them.

WKGMD #1 owns the radar system used in the WKWM program. It is a 5-

centimeter wavelength model WRlOO-2 which operates on a frequency of 5500 -

5600 MHz and develoJOs a peak power of 250 KW. The radar has a plan position

indiL:ator ;.PPI) for horizontal viewing on ranges of either 50, lCD, 0r 250

nautical miles and has a range-height indicator (RllI) for I.orizontal and

vertical height m~as"re~ent.s.

An aircraft interrogator/transponder flight tracking system is incor-

porated into the radar system. Storm activity versus aircraft flight

movements are documented on an 8mm t~rne-lapse camera sys~cm mounted over a

second remote PPI display.

,I.

Additional radar specifications and interrogator/transponder speci-

fications are found in Appendices C and D, respectively.

During operational periods cloud measurements of position, height,

maximum intensity, and height of the 45'dBZ level are routinely recorded

,on a data log. General notes regarding operations, storm movements, and other

information is written separately on another log. Acetate overlays are

hand dr~wn at 20-minute intervals which outline the radar echo positions and

the primary storm intensity centers as well as the location of all aircraft.

These overlays are later transferred to paper for permanent reference

purposes and for post-operational analysis.

On the PPI used for main viewing, is drawn a semi-permanent outline of

the boundaries of the target area, the counties and the positions of some of

',the better known towns. Also, there are drawn lines for each 100 of the

.f

).

,','

-13-
