Storm activity and aircraft positions were <br />also documented by an 8 roro tlmelapse camera system mounted atop a <br />second PP I display nearby. . <br /> <br />Drawn onto the radar PPI 1s the outline of the target area <br />boundaries, target area counties, neighboring counties, state lines <br />and positions of many regional towns. Also, lines are drawn at each <br />ten degrees af compass using the Garden City VOR as the primary <br />aircraft navigational aid. Range marks have been put on those VOR <br />radial lines so ~hat a close approximation of distance and <br />direction from the VOR 1s instantly available. to the meteorologist <br />during operations. <br /> <br />D. AIRCRAFT SEEDING OPERATIONS <br /> <br />Three cloud base seeding aircraft and one Cloud-top <br />aircraft were used in the 1990 operational period. The cloud base <br />planes were: <br /> <br />(1) 3 single engine Piper Aircraft Comanches, PA24-250 <br /> <br />(2) 1 twin engine Piper Navajo, PA31-325 <br /> <br />All three cloud base aircraft were equipped with Carley-type <br />liquid fuel generators for cloud seeding, one mounted to each wing <br />tip. Each generator holds approximately 6 gallons of a liquid <br />seeding agent solution and burns silver iodide at the rate of two <br />grams per minute of operationj approximately two gallons an hour. <br />Each plane carries approximately 720 grams of silver iodide and is <br />capable of a minimum continuous seeding time aloft of about 3 hours <br /><using both generators. simUltaneously), The planes were flown on <br />an as-needed basis during the season. These aircraft worked at <br />cloud base in the preferred updraft areas of ~be clouds. The cloud <br />base planes were stationed at Lakin, Johnson and Scott City. <br /> <br />The cloud top aircraft, based in Dodge City, was equipped with <br />a specially built dry ice dispenser capable of carrying 200 pounds <br />and releasing 5 pounds of dry ice per minute. About 200 additional <br />pounds of dry ice could be carried aboard the plane a5 well. The <br />aircraft normally attempted seeding at the 20.000 foot level, but <br />final altitude assignment depended upon air traffic controllers. <br />The plane made penetrations near cloud top releasing the dry ice <br />into the newly growing clouds around parent storms or into <br />incipient storm development along longer lines. <br /> <br />The WKWM concept under which seeding operations were conducted <br />were similar to many other programs of this kind: The meteorologist <br />makes the operational decisions both to launch and to position the <br />seeding aircraft as well as to send instructions pertaining to <br />seeding operations and flight termination.
