other cloud base planes were able to reach the storm and begin
seeding before dissipation set in. Also, the cloud top plane seeded
briefly around 4:04 p.m. By 4:22 p.m. seeding aircraft began to be
recalled to their bases with all seeding ending at 4:30 p.m.

Around 9:30 p.m. a new storm complex had developed right on
the Colorado/Kansas state line, near Towner, Colorado. There were
no indications of hail on radar, however, the Tribune-based pilot
saw frequent lightning and was subsequently scrambled. Initially,
four cloud base planes were sent up as well as the cloud top plane.
Seedinq for hail suppression began at 9:46 p.m. between Horace and
Towner. Large hail was indicated on radar at 9:48 p.m. A second
plane joined in seeding at 10:01 p.m. and the others at 10:20,
10:24 and 10:42 p.m., respectively.

The storm gre~" l~=g<:l 'c...d .., be-eame .,a multi-cellular ce..,pleA
having two large cores of hail aloft orientedNE-SW; the complex
,moved easterly across Greeley County., north of Tribune. and Highway
96. As the precipitation and hail fell from these' cores, they
merged lower down in the cloud so that at ground level only'one
'large area of hail and heavy rainfall was evident. Seeding was
hindered by strong winds aloft throwing hail and precipitation into
some updraft areas, particularly those of the most northeasterly of
the two storms producing the separate hail cores. Some brief
seeding was done by the cloud top aircraft late in the operation,
seeding weakly growing clouds only briefly, '

The storm began slowing down and dissipating and by 10:56 p.m.
hardly any movement was discernible. Storm intensities and tops
began decreasing and cloud base seeding ended at 11:10 p.m.; only
one quick "pulse" of high radar reflectivity showed hail at 11: 12
p.m. Planes patrolled until 11:20 p.m. before terminating.

e~- II ;/-0

Curtis O. smi~
Program Manager,
Western Kansas Weather Modif ication
