, ~
'-I "'.

However, by 11:12 p.m. a stronger indication of hail was Been
in one storm within the line of storms near Holly necessitatin9 the
scrambling of three cloud base planes. There was a section of the
larger line which was breaking away from the larger line and movin9
southeasterly. Seeding began at 11:29 p.m. near Coolidge; at the
same time the remaining two base seeders were scrambled. Other
aircraft joined in seeding near Coolidge at 11:36, 11:40 and 11:41
p.m. The breakaway line continued reorganizing into a bow-echo
such that by midnight the line lay in an arc running from northwest
Hamilton County southeast over Syracuse then southwest into
northwest Stanton. The fifth plane airborne began seeding i in
northwest Stanton County at 11: 58 p. m. In the interim others ,:had
been positioned for seeding around the line as it developed into
its bow-shape, while moving southeast. ,By 12: 30 a.m. the leading
edge of the bow had moved tothe Kendall-Big Bo~; arEa' L..a..i.liiL9 from,
there' intO southwest' Stanton County' and southeast Baca County,
Colorado. A,lso,. a portion of the vast area of thunderstorms of
lesser intensity and rainshowers, north and northwest of us
earlier, had slid into the northern tier of counties bringing
rainfall to most of them.

By 12:50 a.m. updrafts and radar intensities were lower and
diminishing so two planes were sent back to base. At 12:58 two more
were released and at 1:20 the last plane was sent in. However, a
re-invigoration of storm intensities began to develop in Stevens
County within part of the old southeasterly line which had been
part of the bow-echo and three planes were sent to seed it. A,nother
plane was recalled from landing to look at another separate storm
moving through northern Kearny County around 1:25 a.m. Seeding
began on the Kearnystorm, north of Lakin, at 1:35 a.m. Two planes
ended up seeding in southeastern Stevens County starting at 1;45
and 1:53 a.m., respectively, and ending at 2:01 a.m. as the storms
rolled out of the-County. All flights were ended by 2:10 a.m.

AUGUST 16TH- OPERATIONAL DAY #65; A cluster of thunderstorms
developed in late afternoon around Ness and aodgeman counties and
moved souther.ly. However, an isolated severe storm built ahead of
the cluster along northern Ford County near Spearville. All planes
were scrambled between 8:00 and B:Os p.m. At B:05 p.m. the storm
lay about Smiles NE of spearville.

The most severe storm first moved over Spearville, decreasing
in intensity a little by the time it reached Spearville. Cloud base
seeding started at 8:42 p.m. with two others joining at 8:43 and
8:54 p.m. New cloud growth formed around the main storm; the other
cluster of storms, previously to the north, merged with the newer
storms and the whole mass continued moving further south into Ford
County, but becoming much weaker. All cloud base flights were
terminated at 9:20 p.m. The cloud top plane began seeding at 9:16
p.m. and continued until 9:26 p.m.

About the two other cloud base planes scrambled: one h~d, ~
generator problem and made a quick landing to effect repairs before
flying On to Ford County; however, it was recalled at 9:20 p.m. due
