WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
96-10

RECEIVED
JUN 2 b 1!19a

FOR THE PERIOD JUNE 15 - 21, 1996

Colorado \-V;1~:;~
Conservaticn Scan!

General Interest: Last week we gave out the changed radio frequency
our pilots use to communicate with the radar site in Lakin. Once
again, our new frequency is 122.850 MHz(VHF). The FM frequency used
by the radar site is 155,1 MHz.

To make our program's inner workings more accessible to the
average person, meteorological assistant, Scott Heeke, suggested we
get onto the Internet. We already subscribe to Pioneer Telephone'S
Internet service to access our weather data for forecasting and
analysis, so we are allowed to create their own "home page" at no
extra cos~...ons of, the great .thi~;a ~bo~t this s6rvice. Sco~t
began working with our Electronics Technician, Brian Litzenberger,
to build our "Web Site" into something unique. Brian already had
set up his own personal "home page" with Pioneer and was astute
about making it all come together quickly and had us "on the air"
in no time. Also, he has assumed responsibility for maintaining the
web site. There'S a lot to do on it, but with Brian and Scott
working on its development, we're certain to move forward rapidly.

One of the more interesting things we want to do is to be able
to put our radar pictures into a loop for people to view during
severe storm periods and update it every half-hour, or less, Soon,
whether one lives in the country or town, anyone having a computer
and access to the Internet will be able to view what we see on our
radar almost at the same time we see it. Plus, he'll be able to see
moving storms in progress as well as where our planes are flying.
It will give everyone, anywhere, another option to view severe
storms in near real-time, even hours afterward the next day. until
now, only TV stations have been able to deliver this sort of video
information and the viewer is always at the mercy of what and when
such information is delivered.

We expect our radar looping will have value to storm spotters,
civil defense and law enforcement agencies, power and telephone
companies, news people, the National Weather Service (at times) and
many others unknown to us now who have a genuine need or interest
in,this type of information. If you are one such person or group,
we "d like to hear from you. You can drop us a line at:

P.O. Box 254
Lakin, KS 67860

Or a-mail us at: hailman@pld.com

Our web Site can be accessed through the Internet by entering
this address: http://www.pld.com/users/hailman/master.html

We'll be updating our web site periodically and will keep
people posted through this newsletter and on the KBUF/KFLA Radio
Farm Show with Hap Larson which airs weekdays at 12:20 p.m.
