The differences are most <br />notable at lower elevations. Also, warm periods can occur after a snowfall (storm), and <br />if the snow has fallen between monthly snow course measurements and then a warm <br />period occurs, some of the precipitation that fell as snow will have melted or sublimated <br />by the time the next snow course measurement is made. This is less a problem with the <br />advent of the daily SNOTEL measurements. <br /> <br />5.2.1 Selection of Tarl!:et and Control Areas <br /> <br />In the previous two reports on this project (see NAWC Reports WM 93-12 and <br />WM 94-16) the target area sites chosen for the analysis were Willow Creek Pass snow <br />course and Willow Creek Pass Pillow, which are co-located sites. The control sites <br />used, were Tower and Lynx Pass. This target/control site combination yielded a <br />correlation coefficient of .808. For this report a search was conducted to produce a <br />combination that would provide a higher coordination. <br /> <br />With the advent of a 30 year average (1961-90) by the NRCS for all of its snotel <br />sites (many of which have records which do not go back to 1961) we have been able to <br />estimate snowpack water content using regression techniques for several sites and <br />complete the data set. Thus the historical period on our analysis will now begin in 1961, <br />versus 1965 as has been used in the past. <br /> <br />The new set of control and target area stations chosen for the 1994-95 report are <br />shown on Figure 5.1, and their locations and elevations are provided in Table 5-1. <br /> <br />5-4 <br />
