The approach that we took was to look at "by what process could hail become slush".
Can we work backwards from the reperted effect and then see if the cannon could be
the "cause".

FROM THIS STUDY WE CONCLUDED THE "CAVITATION" IS THE CAUSE,

Researching the subject .of hail formatian proved ta be a lesson in itself. We were
surprised to find that there was very little information on the specifics of the subject.
Invariably the process .of hail farmatian is described alang the fallowing lines:

We start with a big Cumulonimbus cloud. The updrafts within this claud farmation race
upwards at great speeds lifting grawing hailstones upwards within the cloud, When it
gets te the tap .of the claud, the hailstone then descends to the bottom .of the claud in
an area net affected by the updraft where it is redrawn into the updraft again and the
process repeats itself. Durin{l this {ime the hailstone is getting bigg'er and bigger as it
passes threugh the cleud which is loaded with supercooled water vapour, which is
n' ___ _ n _ _ _aJ.tq,ching.1oJbe.hailstone and free~.--AlleF-lhis-journey I,as rapeated1tsetTseveral- u
times, the hailstone becemes toa heavy fer the updraft ta lift it, so it then falls aut of the
cloud, and law and beheld, we have a hail sterml

Other simplistic descriptiens refer to the process thus:

"The hailstene ges up and down and round and reund in the claud getting bigger and
bigger until it falls"'

"The hailstenes have grewth rings in them showing every time that they have
cempleted a loop within the cloud",

This type .of description suggested te us that we were going to have difficulty in laying
our hands on a real geod descriptian of the process, It became apparent that very little
if any work was available to us in respect .of the specifics .of the camplete process, '
The impressien we farmed was that, as most research was concemed with the .Cloud
Seeding" prejects, that there was ne need te fellaw the process in great depth,

CLOUD SEEDING

The "Seeding" projects are based en the very simple premise that if additional artificial
nuclei are added te the cloud at an early stage .of develapment, this will cause the
cleud te shed as rain rather than hail, or in the event that the extra seeds are added
toe late in the event, that more nuclei present will create mere hailstanes and that this
will mean that they are smaller in size than .otherwise weuld be the easel

Fer the purpese .of "Crop Pretection", several major preblems exist in this .otherwise
"brilliant" idea,

1.
