<br />DOLORES <br /> <br />Location: <br />Southwest Colorado. <br /> <br />Sponsor: <br />DOlores Water Conservancy DIstriCt. <br /> <br />Primary Purpose ot the Project: <br />Irrigation. <br /> <br />Secondary Benefits: <br />Municipal and industrial. recreation, fish and wildlife and <br />flood control. <br /> <br />History and Background: <br /> <br />The DOlores Project (authoriZed September30. 1968) (PL <br />90-537). located in the Dolores and San Juan RiverBasins <br />in southwestern COlorado, will develop water from the <br />DOlores River for irrigation. muniCIpal and industrial use. <br />recreation, and fish and wildlife. It will also provide flood <br />control and aid in area economic redevelopment. Service <br />will be provided 10 three areas: the northwest Dove Creek <br />area, 27,860 acres: Montezuma Valley center area, 26.300 <br />acres; and south to the Towaoc area. 7.500 acres, on the <br />Ute Mountain Ute Indian Reservation. <br /> <br />Primary storage of Dolores River flows for all project <br />purposes will be provided by McPhee Reservoir. formed <br />by McPhee Dam and Great Cut Dike. Secondary storage <br />for municipal and industrial water will be furnished by <br />Monument Creek Reservoir located near the town of Dove <br />Creek. which will receive water diverted from McPhee <br />Reservoir. <br /> <br />Dawson Draw Reservoir, located west of McPhee Reser. <br />voir, will be constructed specifically for fish and wildlife <br />and will be supplied primarily from irrigation return flows. <br /> <br />An average annual supply of 9O.900acre-feet of water will <br />be provided to 27,860 acres 01 full service land in the Dove <br />Creek area. 7.500 acres of futl service land in the Towaoc <br />area, and 27,300 acres of supplemental service land in the <br />Montezuma Valley area. Water forthe Dove Creek area will <br /> <br />be pumped from McPhee Reservoir by the Great Cut <br />Pumping Plant and conveyed 39.5 miles through the Dove <br />Creek Canal and its 7.6-mile branch, the South Canal <br />Water for the Towaoc.area will be conveyed 48 miles from <br />the reservoir by the Dolores Tunnel and the Dolores and <br />Towaoc canals. Both areas will be served by sprinkler <br />irrigation systems.
